Training Workshop on Developing Thinking Skills through IBSE for Sustainable Development 9-13 November 2015, Bogor, Indonesia

The Training Workshop on Developing Thinking Skills through IBSE for Sustainable Development was successfully held from 9-13 November 2015 in Bogor, Indonesia. This is the 12th training programme on IBSE organised by ISTIC in collaboration with LAMAP Foundation, France and supported by SEAMEO QITEP in Science (SEAQIS) and Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC), Indonesia.

A total of 38 selected participants from developing countries comprising 10 international participants from Kenya, Malaysia, Myanmar, Maldives, Oman, Palestine, Vietnam and 28 participants from Indonesia participated in this workshop.

The training workshop provided the following knowledge and experience to the participants:

  • Recognise the importance of inquiry-based science education (IBSE) in  teaching science;
  • Recognise the philosophy and ten principles of La main à la pâte;
  • Experience the process of inquiry-based science teaching and learning; and
  • Develop an action plan for disseminating and sharing of experiences on La main à la pâte with colleagues and teachers in their respective home countries;
  • Awareness on the natural disaster with scientific approach

The participants were introduced to LAMAP foundation, philosophy of hands-on and the movement to make science education interesting. The workshop comprised lectures, hands-on activities, preparation and presentation of microteaching based on philosophy and principles of La main à la pâte. This workshop used the When the Earth Rumbles book as activities resources for sustainable development education. During this workshop, the participant were given the opportunities to do the experiment and hands-on activities on natural disaster (earthquake, tsunami and cyclone) and earth science. Three facilitators conducted the training. They were Mr. Francis Morgues and Ms. Karine Merrigeau from La main à la pâte Foundation and Dr. Koay Suan See from SEAMEO Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM).
